Antagonists at the 5HT1B receptor

5-HT (Serotonin) modulates a number of GPCR receptors including a subtype called 5HT1B. This subtype has been used as a target for the triptan migraine drugs including Sumatriptan and Zolmitriptan. Since this receptor is involved with vasoconstrition, we are investigatig its use in Pulmonary Hypertension, a disease involving constriction of the pulmonary arteries. This is a collaborative project. Compound design using computer-based methods was performed in the Unilever Centre Glen Group, (James Bell, PhD), and synthesis in the group of David Spring (http://www-spring.ch.cam.ac.uk/) by Prashant Kapadnis (PhD student), Warren Galloway (Post Doctoral Scientist) and Gemma Hughes. (PhD student). Pharmacology was performed by the group of Robin Hiley (http://www.phar.cam.ac.uk/ri/hiley.html) by Dynatra Subasinghe (PhD student). Novel molecules have been patented. An evaluation of compounds is underway in a model of PAH in the group of Margaret Maclean, Glasgow (http://www.gla.ac.uk:443/ibls/staff/staff.php?who=||QPAA).
